Ambassador Speaks on Security Challenges Around the World
Sir Mark Lyall Grant addresses BritishAmerican Business members about global security challenges.
New York, NY--February 18, 2010--BritishAmerican Business (BAB), the leading transatlantic business organization, yesterday hosted Sir Mark Lyall Grant, the United Kingdom Permanent Representative to the United Nations, as part of its regular series of briefings by premier foreign diplomats. Addressing an audience of more than 100 senior business executives, Ambassador Lyall Grant delivered a powerful speech that touched on security challenges around the world, and why the international community must carefully consider how best to respond to them.
In “The Security Challenge 2010—Threat and Response: From Al Qaeda and Taliban to Iran and North Korea,” Ambassador Lyall Grant emphasized the UN’s role in offering practical help on counter-terrorism worldwide, even while it doesn’t play a direct operational role. “The UN can work with states to raise standards and enhance counter-terrorism capability, and monitor the evolution of risks and threats which often go beneath the radar,” he said. “And in countries like Yemen and Algeria, it can promote vital economic and political reform as well as deliver humanitarian and development assistance.”
Richard Fursland, CEO of BritishAmerican Business, said, “We are delighted that Mark Lyall Grant was able to join us for such an informative and engaging conversation. His comprehensive account of pressing global security issues will inform BritishAmerican Business members as they continue to operate in international markets.” Ambassador Lyall Grant echoed Fursland’s statement, saying, “'It is essential to the development and promotion of foreign policy objectives that organizations like BAB are able to bring together influential people to discuss important and topical issues of the day.”
BritishAmerican Business regularly hosts foreign and U.S. ambassadors to address its membership about key issues in international policy. Past speakers include Sir Nigel Sheinwald, British Ambassador to the United States; Louis Susman, U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom; and Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for Competition.
