BAB Submission to Department for Transport
BritishAmerican Business (BAB) is the leading transatlantic business organization, comprising and representing more than 500 of the world’s leading multinational and middle-market companies across sectors and geographies. More than 100 of the world’s most successful CEOs support our work through their participation in our Advisory Board.
BAB welcomes the Government’s Draft Airport National Policy Statement (NPS), the latest step toward adding airport capacity in the UK. BAB has strongly supported plans to add airport capacity in the UK by building a third runway at Heathrow since it was first formally proposed in 2007 as a way to overcome serious airport capacity constraints in the country.
Since then we have worked with Governments on supporting Heathrow expansion, providing evidence and submissions that demonstrate the positive impact it will have on companies operating in and through the transatlantic economic corridor.
Heathrow plays an essential role in the success and future of the UK-US economic relationship, which is worth almost a trillion dollars in investment and hundreds of millions in trade.
New York is the top destination from Heathrow and every month over one million visitors from North America land in Heathrow. 87% of American business visitors repeatedly travel to the UK bringing substantial business with them.
As a transatlantic business association, our members rely on being able to bring in products to the UK and serve as a connecting point to Europe and the rest of the world.
The new proposed runway means more flights, more commerce and more travellers able to do business in the UK. This has clear benefits for industry supply chains, the local and national economy, particularly as we aim to bring the UK and US economy even closer together.
Now, more than ever, the UK needs to assert its commitment to remain a competitive and open player in the global market by adding airport capacity in the UK. We hope that with the NPS, the final hurdle can be taken to achieving this without further delay.
