How did the prospect of a New York office come about?
It was an aspiration of Fraser Bell’s from 3 years ago, after the successful acquisition of NetRoot a long standing MSP in London in 2013. Ashley Lukas who was the Managing Director of NetRoot, had a proven track record of delivering IT support and we felt that he was a safe and experienced pair of hands to spearhead our New York operation.
What hurdles did you have to overcome?
Ashley and Fraser have both said they are willing to sit down and have a coffee to discuss this in further depth because there were unbelievably more complications than you can imagine. They managed to narrow it down to two they considered the most challenging. Gaining a Visa was a struggle as a lot of conflicting advice was given; however, the route which was ultimately taken though long winded, had the highest chance of success- and was therefore worth putting in the work.
Finding the right CPA (Accountant) was difficult, however in hindsight it would’ve been easier to find a CPA who had experience with setting up a foreign entity in the US. This would have negated any confusion as to what type of entity Northern Star should be set up as e.g. a company, partnership etc. and whether they should decide to set up the company in New York and trade through New York or to set up in Delaware and then get a license to trade through New York.
To whom/what do you attribute your success?
The main factors which helped achieve this were hiring an exceptional team and attending lots of networking events, particularly with the British American Business & UKTI networks; as the year continues these connections are really starting to blossom. Hiring a recruitment agent who knew how to funnel candidates to find exactly the right mix of technical ability and customer service, was also key. Overall, though, the synchronicity of having offices in NY and the UK has been key in allowing us to deliver exceptional IT service to companies coming from the UK to the US.
How is the New York office doing now?
Fraser and Ashley created a 5-year plan and we are on track for our first year budget and in fact we’re the busiest we have ever been one year on. Northern Star’s next aspirations are to open offices in San Francisco and Singapore.
