Meet the Speaker: Susan Hinkson-Carling, EVP, Capalino+Company

Susan Hinkson-Carling has fostered a life-long love of and commitment to the built environment. With over 30 years of experience in architecture, land use and urban planning, Susan has assisted a broad variety of clients navigate the real estate landscape in New York.  In 1987, Susan opened her own architectural firm and grew the business into a successful and robust retail design firm.  Working with various municipalities across the country, she developed a keen interest in government and the policies that affect our daily interactions with our physical surroundings.   Following her developing passion for policy, Susan entered into the world of government and policy where she has held several senior level positions in both the public sector.

Prior to joining Capalino + Company, where she is a Managing Member of Capalino Ventures, LLC the real estate investment and venture capital arm of Capalino + Company, Susan served as Vice Chair and Commissioner of the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals, where she adjudicated zoning variances, special permits and administrative appeals cases. Prior to her roles with NYC BSA, she served as the Brooklyn and Staten Island Borough Commissioner for the NYC Department of Buildings, enforcing the NYC Zoning Resolution, Building and Fire Codes.  As Deputy Commissioner of Planning and Community Development for Sullivan County, Susan oversaw numerous community development initiatives. Earlier in her distinguished career in public service, Susan served as Capital Program Manager for the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, administering over $300M dollars in design and construction contracts for the City’s cultural institutions.

Susan is a graduate of the Fiieldston School. She holds an architecture degree from the Pratt Institute and a JD and LLM from New York Law School.  Susan is a registered architect in the state of New York. Susan sits on the Board of Trustees of Wave Hill, New York Law School, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
