Commenting on the signing of the new UK-US trade agreement, BritishAmerican Business CEO Duncan Edwards said:
“BritishAmerican Business members will welcome today’s announcement of an agreement to ease some of the recently imposed tariffs on UK exports to the USA, and to increase market access for certain food and agricultural products. This is certainly a step in the right direction, and both governments should be congratulated for the work they have done in reaching an agreement.
“However, we must be clear, this agreement still means that UK exporters to the USA face higher costs than before April 2nd as the general 10% ‘reciprocal’ tariff remains in place.
“Our hope is that this agreement represents the start of a broader process through which the US and UK work to remove tariff and non-tariff barriers that exist between these two great markets, and which should be unnecessary between such similarly structured economies.
“Discussion about a future digital economy agreement is also very welcome and we look forward to seeing details of these proposals as they become available.
“Today’s agreement provides a foundation, but not a finish line. There is more to do to restore and strengthen the trading conditions between the UK and USA. BritishAmerican Business looks forward to working with policymakers and companies on both sides of the Atlantic to build on today’s momentum to deliver real benefits to business.”
