Meet the speaker:
Dr Michael Alexander
Senior Research Fellow, UCL Institute of Health Equity
Dr Michael Alexander is a senior research fellow at the UCL Institute of Health Equity, where he has authored The Business of Health Equity: The Marmot Review for Industry with Sir Michael Marmot. This report aimed to set out a framework for how the private sector can contribute to health equity by shaping the basic building blocks of health for their employees, their customers, and wider communities. For the IHE, he has also worked on improving health equity in Luton and Hong Kong, and is currently working on projects in Kent and Medway.
He returned to the IHE this year, having spent two years working in public health in Blackpool, during which time he also gained a masters degree in public health, and worked on projects including the health harms of gambling and the health of trans and gender diverse people across Lancashire. Prior to working at the IHE, he worked as a junior doctor in a range of medical departments, latterly in medium security forensic mental health. He also served for several years as the Treasurer of GLADD, the Association of LGBTQ+ Doctors and Dentists.
On occasions when he is not thinking about public health, he can also regularly be seen at the Tower Theatre in Stoke Newington, although if his face seems familiar it is still most likely to be from appearances on University Challenge and Only Connect. He lives in North East London with his husband.
