On the proposed new Greenland related tariffs, BritishAmerican Business CEO Duncan Edwards, said:
“BritishAmerican Business (BAB) members on both sides of the Atlantic will be concerned to hear about the possible further use of tariffs by the US administration against Nato allies, including the UK, in connection with its aims to acquire Greenland.
“While BAB is instinctively opposed to tariffs between similarly structured economies, we have acknowledged that a case could be made by the US for its ‘reciprocal’ tariffs based on the higher tariffs and non-tariff barriers of some of its trading partners and America’s large trade deficit in goods.
“It seems to us that no such case can be made in this case in which tariffs are being used to pursue an entirely unrelated geopolitical issue.
“A separate argument about the importance of Greenland to the security of the United States and the North Atlantic might also be made, but the threat of tariffs to force Denmark to the table seems totally unreasonable.
“We need to see what happens before making a full judgement and the decision of the Supreme Court on the use of IEEPA for the reciprocal tariffs may make this question moot, but this certainly feels like a step too far by the administration and the threat should be withdrawn”.
